7 Secrets of Successful People

What differentiates those who are successful from those who are not? There are many answers to this question. Some of the most striking ones are also quite obvious and they boil down to – winning characteristics developed through repeatedly practising good habits.

In business and in life, if you truly want to succeed, there are some habits that work and there are other habits that never should be repeated.

If you’re not as successful as you want to be and you know you can do better, copy good habits from successful people.

Just as important, eliminate any of your own habits that are holding you back. Here are seven top secrets of successful people:

1. Clear Vision

Successful people have a clear vision for their lives. They understand that life is not about pleasing people but living on purpose. A well-known author once said, “It’s not only possible, it is necessary to live your dream.” If you don’t have a vision your life your dreams will remain just that – dreams.

There will always be negative people who may try to talk you out of your dreams and the vision you have for your life. Successful people overcome this obstacle because they recognise that it is impossible to please everyone and therefore they do not to even bother trying. Instead, they focus on their vision and map out strategies to make it a reality.

It is clear that the better you can envision where you are going, the more you can focus on specific actions that will make that vision a reality.

2. Use Mistakes as Learning Experiences

Whether it’s in business, a job, or a relationship, successful people learn from their mistakes and those of others. If something didn’t work the first time, they don’t try it again expecting a different result. Successful people know that mistakes are for learning, not for repeating.

3. Delayed Gratification

Successful people understand the value of delayed gratification. They know that things take time, and it’s the daily grind that in the end will get them to their dreams. It’s the small painful steps you go through day by day that will benefit you in the future. If you can make it through the pain you will get to the gain.

4. Integrity

Truly successful people hold themselves to high standards and never try to adjust themselves to fit in with the crowd. They know and understand who they are so they don’t try to change themselves for others. Successful people don’t do things to please people, they do things to fulfil their purpose. They do not allow the negative opinions of other people to become their reality.

5. Don’t Take Everything at Face Value

No matter how great something looks on the surface, successful people do their due diligence and make sure that what they are looking at has actual value and is worthy of their time. They know that when something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

6. Focus

“It takes about six years of hard work to become an overnight success.” ~ Seth Godin

One trait virtually all successful people share is focus. They never take their eyes off their visions, dreams and goals; they do what they need to do and they do it with meticulous determination. People who are successful know where they are going, and because they do, they succeed. Someone once said, “If you’re casual about life, you’ll end up a casualty.”

7. Have a Strong Identity

Who you are on the inside should be what is reflected on the outside. The moment the two are disconnected, there is inner conflict. Success requires that you bring all parts of who you are–inside and out–and that you keep everything in sync. It isn’t easy, but the people who are most successful never fragment themselves to be successful.

The time to begin your own journey to success is now. Most people fail in life, not because they aim too high but because they aim too low. Take time to examine your habits and commit yourself to making your vision a reality. Remember, if you know your “why” you can endure any “how.”
