6 Important Lessons I’ve Learned About Hootsuite

For those who are not familiar with Hootsuite let me start by explaining what it is.  Hootsuite is a social media management tool which allows users to manage multiple social media accounts from one platform.

Hootsuite was created by Ryan Holmes in 2008. The system’s user interface takes the form of a dashboard, and supports social network integrations for:

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Foursquare, MySpace, WordPress, TrendSpottr and Mixi.

Additional integrations are available via Hootsuite’s App Directory, including Instagram, MailChimp, Reddit, Storify, Tumblr, Vimeo and YouTube.

Based in Vancouver, Hootsuite has over 500 staff located in Vancouver, San Francisco, New York, Hong Kong, London, Sydney, Singapore, and other countries. The company operates on a freemium model and has over 10 million users in more than 175 countries. While this number quite impressive, the tool has more potential to grow.

When I was first heard about Hootsuite I was reluctant to jump on the bandwagon. It just sounded too good to be true. At the time I was struggling to manage two Twitter accounts, three Facebook pages, one Facebook group, my own Facebook account as well as a Linkedin profile where I actively participate in several groups. Even though I was spending several hours a day managing those accounts when I could have been earning money I did not see the value of paying a monthly fee to Hootsuite to manage those accounts. That was until I tried it. Fortunately Hootsuite has a free package which allows users to manage up to three accounts. I jumped at the chance to give it a try and have not looked back since then. Here I am going to share what I have learnt as a Hootsuite user.

  1. Hootsuite is Super Powerful

If there is one thing you take away from this article, understand that Hootsuite is very powerful if used properly and has the potential to change social media management as we know it! While you may or may not have heard of Hootsuite yet, I am personally inviting you to check it out.

One of the reasons Hootsuite is more powerful than other social platforms is the real-time interaction between the user and their audience or followers. When logged on, the user has the chance to see what discussions are taking place and to respond to followers directly without having to log on to different accounts. Believe it or not, people like it when they know you’re listening to what they have to say and responding quickly. This is especially true if you want to show your brand as being caring and responsive. You have the opportunity to shine because you can provide real-time answers to questions, showing off your expertise.

Your followers get the chance to know you and helps them assess whether they want to work with you.  Essentially, this is a quick way to build the know, like, and trust factor.

  1. Hootsuite Increases Your Followers Naturally

Using Hootsuite allows you to schedule posts in advance on days and at times when they will have the most impact. Maintaining a social media presence using advanced scheduling  gives you social media credibility. If your content is rich, relevant and interesting your followers will be more likely to share it thus increasing your reach and gaining new followers.

Pre-scheduled posts, as well as the live interaction, have helped to grow my followers into thousands. They may not be massive numbers, but I know they are genuine followers who follow my posts, share and are loyal customers.

  1. Hootsuite Allows You to Develop Better Relationships

Since I started using Hootsuite I have been able to develop relationships with people who share my passion for social media. This two-way interaction enables us to support each other as we promote our brands. It has allowed me to get to know my followers better. I have even managed to build good partnerships with some of them. The relationship-building potential is amazing on Hootsuite!

  1. Hootsuite Can Be Used to Teach

If your business can teach others how to do something better, this is the perfect platform for you!  While there are a few limitations, there is a great potential to teach through live social interactions. So, how can you monetize this? Teach some of what you have and create an environment where you leave them wanting the rest!

Remember, content that shows you are an expert in what you do will attract the right people to you!

  1. You Can Learn a LOT on Hootsuite

I cannot begin to tell you how much I have learned since I started using Hootsuite! I am able to listen in to and participate in several conversations or discussions. Hootsuite also has an app which customises the content feeds according to your requirements. There is lots of information out there and, on my own, I could never find the time to read it and learn. I am now an expert in my own right thanks to Hootsuite.

A final tip here – remember that learning only becomes useful when you put it into action. Otherwise you’re not doing yourself any favour. It’s very easy to spend time on social media without monetising it and earning income.

  1. Hootsuite is Fun, but Addictive

As mentioned above, Hootsuite can be addictive.  While you may be using it for business purposes, it is so much fun because you have the chance to interact with your audience directly! When I first started using Hootsuite I spent far too much time and neglected important tasks. That’s when I learnt to set aside time for choosing relevant content, scheduling posts and time to interact with my followers.

While Hootsuite is a powerful business tool, it is also great for social interaction.

This brings me to another point I want to make.  When you share content, it is important to also be interesting and entertaining.  This is not just about humour or the lack of it. Business is a serious matter. However, you need to have a presence and people must be able to relate to you so they will interact.

Conclusion

I recommend that you at least check out this platform for yourself, whether you’re an individual, business owner, or social media marketing manager. You may not need the most expensive package Hootsuite has to offer and may choose to be a free user. Whatever your decision, know this – you can use Hootsuite to connect with your target audience and start building valuable relationships.
